17th Highway Africa conference

Du 1er au 2 septembre 2013 | Rhodes University, Grahamstown

The conference will discuss the theme “Speaking Truth To Power ? Media, Politics and Accountability”.

Key voices in the African Media Industry have been handpicked to speak to this theme and to give insights as to how the media can effectively use its role as a discourse shaper, to speak to power in addition to speaking of it.
The conference will kick off on the 1st of September 2013. Using a combination of plenary sessions, keynote addresses, debates, training workshops, networking dinners and book launches, the conference will explore the role of the media in power relations, that is, how it can or should speak to power and engage in politics, whilst meeting its obligations and roles to and in society.

Some of the key questions the sessions will interrogate include :
i) What are the dominant trends in the relationship of the media, politics and society ?
ii) What are the theoretical assumptions that underpin modern media’s role in society and vis-à-vis power ?
iii) What are the accountability strategies and structures of the media to society and political authority ? How efficient and effective are they ?
iv) Where are “the People” (society) in the discourse of the relationship of the media and the state ?
v) How are the people formerly called “the audience” using social media to question both the media and the state ? How they using alternative media to communicate their views and issues and to what effect ?
vi) What strategies should media associations adopt to secure freedom of the press, freedom of information, guarantee media accountability and to continue to “speak truth to power” ?

This 17th edition of the Highway Africa conference will be yet another occasion for reflections on the role of journalism and the media in society.
