Freedom of expression is under siege in most of Africa. In the first two months of 2013 : a Somali court convicted a rape victim and the journalist who interviewed her to a one-year prison sentence for “insulting a government body” ; in Egypt, a court imposed a 30-day ban on YouTube for hosting a video “offensive to Islam” ; and in Mali, the French and Malian military are suppressing reporting on the conflict, making it a war largely “without images and without facts”, according to journalist Jean-Paul Mari with the French newsweekly Le Nouvel Observateur.
