High Level Consultation on Governance and Democracy Trends in Africa

This consultation seeks to explore Africa’s evolving governance and democracy challenges and threats. It will also examine the AU’s capacity to assist Member States in consolidating democracy, strengthening the rule of law, constitutionalism and in promoting human rights and peoples rights. The consultation will among others deliberate on the following key issues :

- The centrality of democracy and governance to peace, security and development in Africa ;
- Electoral violence and disputed elections ;
- Strengthening the rule of law and constitionalism in Africa ;
- Potential solutions to unconstitutional changes in governments ;
- Economic governance and structural challenges ;
- The application of the Principle of the Responsibility to Protect and Issues of humanitarian affairs ;
- Human and peoples’ rights and Transitional Justice.
