High Rate of Ratifications of OAU-AU Treaties Witnessed under the Auspices the African Union

Addis Ababa, 20 May 2013

In a few days, African Heads of States will be gathering in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the African Union (AU). Since 1963, the OAU-AU has adopted a number of treaties, the most recent being the Establishment Agreement of the African Risk Capacity, a Specialized Agency of the African Union established for the primary purpose of mitigating the effects of drought on the Continent.

These treaties provide the basis for collective actions and solutions in addressing the political, economic and social challenges that impede Africa’s integration and development, while also reflecting the principle of inter-linkage between peace, stability, development, integration and cooperation in Africa. Although there have been constraints and challenges affecting the pace of ratification of these treaties, there is an encouragingly high rate of ratifications witnessed under the auspices the African Union.

Ms Djeneba Diarra, Legal Counsel of the AU, made this statement at a press briefing on 20 May 2013 on the status of ratification of OAU-AU Treaties. She indicated that the Golden Jubilee of the OAU is a momentous time, and that it is important to take stock of the achievements regarding the legal and normative framework adopted by the AU Member States as well as address the challenges facing their legal architecture.
