The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) is a non-governmental and non-profit research network that was founded in 1980. Its constituency is based on membership drawn from social scientists and institutions engaged in teaching and/or research in the social sciences in Eastern and Southern Africa. Currently, there are 21 member countries in the region where OSSREA has National Chapters and Liaison Offices. Membership is open to all individuals and institutions engaged in teaching and/or research. Its headquarters are based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its mission is to promote dialogue and interaction between researchers and policy-makers with a view to enhancing the impact of research on policy-making and development planning. Thus, OSSREA not only engages in interdisciplinary research but also provides research grants to junior and senior scholars based in the region. It also offers training in Research Methodology. OSSREA operates major projects either independently or in collaboration with other institutions and produces a variety of scholarly publications ranging from its bi-annual journal (Eastern Africa Social Science Research Review-EASSRR) to monographs, books and research reports. It developped between 1999-2001 a project « Good Governance and Wider Civil Society Participation in Eastern and Southern Africa ».
