The Africa Governance Institute (AGI) is the fruit of discussions between the African Union Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Office for Africa. The principal idea is to establish a framework on governance in Africa, connected to the African Union (AU) and yet independent in its functioning, to lead to greater reflection on governance at a continental level. The AGI was conceived as a centre for study, research and propositions on governance in Africa. It is designed to contribute to elaborating methods of research, promotion and innovative training as well as in developing specialized knowledge and in researching solutions adapted to the major problems of governance with which the African continent is confronted. The Institute represents added value in relation to work by existing governance institutes and centres, which constitute its point of reference, but the Institute must also define its own role independently of these. Given the global nature of governance, its approach is multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial. It has as its objective to combine the functions of both forum and source of information and ideas, as well as being a mechanism for strengthening governance and governance institutions in Africa.
