The Alliance for Restructuring Governance in Africa links up African and non-African actors involved in action and discussion, anxious to promote to both citizens of Africa and the world discussion on the management of state affairs in Africa. Since 2003, it has incorporated the continuation of the network ‘Dialogues on governance in Africa: decentralisation and regional integration’. Created in 1999, this was an initiative by African key figures, most of whom had been in high office in their country and observed from the inside, how the process of transformation in the world and African societies was eluding Africans themselves; due to the fact that inadequate modes of governance, imported or imposed from the outside, were unfit to respond to Africans’ needs and reinforced Africa’s inability to respond to the challenges of globalisation.

The Alliance’s mission is to contribute to the building of a governance project peculiar to Africa, conceived by Africans and deeply anchored in the realities of Africa.

Thus, it has set as its objectives:

  • Building an inter-African public space of discussion and deliberation on governance;

  • Developing and debating proposals to change the management of state affairs in Africa;

  • Mobilising state and non-state actors in initiatives for effective restructuring of governance in Africa

  • Participating in debate on questions of governance in Africa and the world.
