The West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) was created by the Treaty signed in Dakar on 10 January 1994 by Heads of State and Governments of seven West African countries, sharing a common currency, the West African CFA franc. The Treaty came into effect on 1st August 1994, after its ratification by member states.

The member states are: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo (1994) and Guinea Bissau (1997).
