The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) was established in the year 2000 purposely to contribute to the « establishment of a just and free society » in Ghana that is democratic, prosperous, integrated and secure in the West African sub-region and beyond. Established at a time of growing public interest in the advancement of democratisation and good governance in the hitherto authoritarian, turbulent, and underdeveloped polities of the West African sub-region, the founders of IDEG committed themselves to work for the consolidation of democratic governance within and beyond the boundaries of Ghana. Consequently, IDEG was conceptualised to function as the leading centre of excellence, delivering cutting edge services relevant to the empowerment of citizens and enhancement of their ability to sustain democratic governance and equitable development.
As a civil society research, advocacy and capacity building organisation, IDEG is committed to a set of organisational principles and objectives. In the discharge of its primary functions, IDEG subscribes to principles of non-partisanship, not-for-profit, and independence, having as key objectives:
To carry out research and analysis of public policies, including monitoring their impact on democracy and good governance;
To publish and disseminate information on research findings so as to enlighten public policy debates and strengthen advocacy for alternative development strategies;
To develop ideas and methods for effective participation of civil society and private sector actors in the public policy process through the formulation, implementation and evaluation of economic and social development policies;
To organise public forums to sustain popular participation in development policy thinking, dialogue, and consensus building in order to foster strategic partnership between non-state and state actors; and
To promote awareness and strengthen respect for human rights and democratic values and norms in national and regional developmental processes.
